 Candle Lighting Minute of Silence  Master of Ceremonies: Ms. Alison Smale, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications 12 Apr 2019 - 2019 marks the 25th Anniversary of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The Annual commemoration will take place in the presence of the Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Rwanda to the United Nations. The Commemoration will include testimonies by survivors of the genocide. It will also include candle lighting and musical elements by the UN orchestra from the UN Chamber Music Society. - António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General - María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, President of the United Nations General Assembly - President Paul Kagame of Rwanda - Valentine Rugwabiza, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Rwanda to the United Nations - Esther Mujawayo-Keiner, Therapist and activist, co-founder of Association of Widows of April’s Genocide (AVEGA) - Rev. Marcel Uwineza, S.J., Jesuit Priest and doctoral candidate in systematic theology at Boston College, and survivor of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda 7 April 1994 marks the beginning of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda perpetrated by the Hutu extremist-led government. Within the following 100 days, more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi minority were systematically murdered. Moderate Hutu and others who opposed the killings were also killed during that period. In 2003, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed 7 April the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.  FORMAL REMARKS H.E.
