WPTV Reported from UNHQ : The second High Level meeting of the Arab-African Initiative was held on March 15th at the United Nations building at the Delegate’s Lounge.
The Arab-African Initiative was inaugurated on September 17, 2006 in New York in a meeting chaired by H.E. Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, President of the United Nations 61st General Assembly with the approval of the former Secretary General Kofi Anna. In attendance were a number of major figures from Africa and the Arab world.
In view of Egypt’s chairmanship of the African Union for the year 2019, the Initiative will launch a new program focused on financing the private sector and the Programs of Civil Society in Africa and the Arab world. It aims at supporting their efforts to achieve the U.N. Sustainable Goals of 2030 Goals and the African Union 2063 Goals.
The UN’s latest report suggests that progress has stalled on poverty alleviation and hunger. As a result, our Initiative aims to mobilize support for sustainable development from civil society and the private sector in both the Arab world and Africa, pooling together resources and know-how both domestically and from global partners, and applying them with the advice and support of local leaders to maximum effect.
A redoubled effort is necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by the 2030 target, and this luncheon will provide an opportunity for the participants in the meeting offer insight on how to arrive there.
The Initiative aims at establishing a special fund to facilitate the private sector and civil society groups, in cooperation with the Developmental Funds in the Arab World and in Africa.
The Initiative dedicated a special program for women entrepreneurs and women activist groups. As indication of the commitment, the Initiative is organizing its second meeting during the conference on the rights of women.
At the Delegate’s Lounge. The meeting was attended by several African and Arab Ambassadors, as well as high level officials from both regions.
